Murano Beads And Jewelry

Millefori Murano BeadsMurano glass jewelry has always been an exclusive staff. It’s not only achingly beautiful, but it also carries a powerful positive energy. As Murano beads  are made directly by the hands! They are valued highly because of embedding of soul and live person feelings in the production process of that incredible artwork.  The Murano glass beads, also known as Venetian glass beads, are very trendy, widely demanded all over the world.

The history of the Murano glass started in 1291, when the city council of Venice had decided to move glass workshops on the island of Murano to protect the masters’  secrets from the competitors and guard the city from the fires, which could be caused by the heated master mines. The glassmakers have got the highest privileges, but lost the right to leave the Murano Island.  In three hundred years the glory of Venetian glass has become truly global.

Murano beadsNowadays, like many years ago, on the island of Murano new factories and workshops are opening up, but the same old ways are employing in the manufacturing of any glass items – from beads to mirrors and tableware. The coloring of glass is achieved by the injection of oxides of non-ferrous metals to the glass mass, which are changing their color by the high temperature influence. Iron oxide colors the glass mass in green, copper oxide – in green or red tone, tin oxide – in milky white, the admixture of gold gives ruby tone and cobalt – blue color. Gold and silver tones are achieved by introducing gold and silver foil. So, the Murano glassmakers use no paints at all.

Any additives are not introduced in Murano glass, as in the crystals, it is always just the glass. However, externally the material has the level of crystal. One of distinguishing features of the Venetian glass is its homogeneity, purity and transparency. The colorless Murano glass is called – «cristallo».

Depending on techniques of making Murano glass beads there are many types of them like Lampwork, Millefiori or Mosaic, Blown Beads, Rosetta and others. Different refined glasses are used in them like crystalline glass, enameled glass, glass with threads of gold, multicolored glass, milk glass, and glass studded with imitation of gemstones.

The most popular variation of the Murano glass beads is Millefiori. The Millefiori beads production process hasn’t changed from the time it was first created, in the 15 century. The master makes multi-colored glass threads which are welded into a narrow cylindrical rod, whose cross-section has the form of stars, rosettes or any symmetrical shape. Then the glass rod is cutted, as a bread baguette, and these plates are introduced into the transparent glass mass. Such beads look like they are woven of small stars or flowers.

Unfortunately, the more popular product, the greater the temptation for frauds to make a forgery. Of course, if you have ever seen a product of Venetian glass, you’ve remembered forever the subtle play of colored threads and bubbles. But even if you have never seen a fantastically beautiful glass, the information about the original can help to abstain from buying a fake. First, you have to draw attention to the surface. The Murano beads are very smooth and extremely durable, due to a deep heat treatment during their manufacturing. The original Murano glass jewelry is handmade and each of them has no repetitions, so if there are two similar products in different places, they are 100% fake. They say that the glass, made by the Venetian makers` hands, has the ability to “breathe”, so people often feel a genuine product that conveys a special coolness, mood and sincere feelings of the master. Well, glass cannot lie! Therefore, before you make a purchase, just hold the jewelry in your hand.
